NGOs are non-governmental organizations and play important role in upholding humanitarian services in the society and there are many NGOs undertaking brilliant work in different fields like human rights, environmental, or development work. India is likely to have had around 2 million NGOs operating in 2009, just about one NGO per 600 Indians.
Some of the well-known NGOs operating in India are Help Age India, which was established in the year 1978 and have been contributing to help the elderly people in India and protect the rights of elderly by raising resources.
While others like Pratham, an NGO that works to provide quality education to the deprived and poor children.
Teach for India another NGO is committed to work towards ending educational imbalance in the country. Goonj is involved in collecting clothes and distributing the same among the needy.
AkshyaPatra provide mid-day meal to the poor and moreover a significant number of NGOs are involved in providing quality skills and employment opportunities and to give a better livelihood to the poor.
In the long-term, NGOs continue to play a larger and vital role in nation-building and providing philanthropic services for the disadvantaged sections of the society. There are more accountable NGOs like Smile Foundation (works for child healthcare and education), Give India (involved in different fields like medical relief, relief for poor, preservation of environment, education, etc.), Lepra Society (works for prevention and control of diseases), Udaan (helps to improve and develop positive attitude in the PLWHAs and MSM/TGs), and others that are delivering services to the poor and needy more effectively and efficiently using the resources in the best way.
There are many other NGOs like Sargam Sanstha, Deepalaya, Uday Foundation, Karmayog, and many other large NGOs and also smaller NGOs that fill the gap that is uncovered by the government and thus, NGOs will continue to play a larger role in Indian society and aiding the elderly, deprived, orphan, disadvantaged poor people, and etc.
